Profile

SYNOPSIS: A journalist creates a fake profile and pretends to be a muslim convert to connect with an ISIS recruiter.

MY TAKE: This movie was based on a true story. It was interesting, but was pretending to be an ISIS-bride-to-be brilliant or foolish? The whole movie played out on the journalist’s screen, a format called Screenlife. Various windows and notifications popped in and out, which effectively conveyed the online nature of the UK-based journalist’s interactions with the Syria-based jihadist. I liked the movie, although you don’t necessarily have to catch it on a big screen because – Screenlife.

Finding You

SYNOPSIS: Finley meets a charming heartthrob while on a semester abroad in Ireland.

MY TAKE: The movie tried to be charming but was kinda cliché and cheesy. There were some scenes so cheesy that they were awkwardly funny. The scenery was wonderful though, making you want to visit the Irish coast. It was also nice to see Vanessa Redgrave onscreen even though she was only part of one of several subplots. The trailers were wrong – this was NOT the Notting Hill for today’s generation, though younger audience members may still like the movie.

In The Heights

SYNOPSIS: A look at the lives and dreams of the immigrants who live in Washington Heights.

MY TAKE: I enjoyed the movie, especially the cinematography and the musical numbers, which, in Lin-Manuel Miranda style, included different musical genres. Casting was great, and the actors could actually sing, unlike Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia! The story, familiar to many immigrants, was based on the hit Broadway musical but tweaked and updated a bit. Be on the lookout for cameos and easter eggs. Stay all the way to the end for a post-credits bonus scene!
