Ready Player One

20180327 poster Ready Player One 1

SYNOPSIS: In 2045, people go to the virtual reality world of the OASIS to escape their daily lives. Many of them are also gunters, hunting for an Easter egg left there by the now-deceased creator of the OASIS. The prize – ownership of the OASIS. Also trying to find the Easter egg is a large corporation – the bad guy.

MY TAKE: Another win for Steven Spielberg! As expected, the special effects are great. But just as enjoyable are the music and all those references to ’80’s pop culture. Surprisingly, the movie is also funny! And other than a slight lull early in the movie, the pacing is just right, making the 2:20 run time go by quickly. You may want to brush up on your ’80’s pop culture and The Shining knowledge though before you go watch this movie. Yes, go!

Finding Your Feet

SYNOPSIS: After finding out her husband had been cheating on her, Sandra moves in with her sister, who then invites Sandra to join her dance class. And as Sandra dances, she also starts to heal and even find romance with Charlie.

MY TAKE: This British dramedy is easy enough to like, BUT I can’t help thinking of Sandra and Charlie as their Harry Potter alter-egos, Dolores Umbridge and a slimmed-down Peter Pettigrew! Aaaaaaahhhh!!! Now I have planted a seed in your mind and you’re going to see Dolores Umbridge and Peter Pettigrew, too, when you watch this movie. Sorry.

Sherlock Gnomes

SYNOPSIS: Gnomeo and Juliet join forces with Sherlock Gnomes and Watson to solve the mystery of the disappearing gnomes in their new hometown, London. In the process, they learn lessons about prioritizing your loved ones over your work.

MY TAKE: Even if you haven’t seen the original movie, you won’t have a problem following this sequel’s storyline – it stands on its own. However, despite being a mystery, the storyline does not draw you in. That said, kids will still like the movie because of the cute gnomes and their antics.

Pacific Rim Uprising

SYNOPSIS: Ten years after the defeat of Kaijus, another threat from the Precursors appears. Jake Pentecost must co-pilot a Jaeger and live up to his father’s legacy and save humanity.

MY TAKE: Lots of good action scenes, computer-generated effects are great, and there are even funny moments. Never saw the first movie? No problem – the movie starts with a brief narrative that catches you up. However, the movie could stand to add a few more minutes to its two-hour run time to better explain some of the plot points, like how the young Amara’s drifting skills develop so quickly despite her abridged training period. The Jaegers vs. Kaijus Japan fight scenes also kinda remind me of Godzilla, albeit with waaaaay better effects 🙂 Overall, a fun action-packed movie.

Love, Simon

20180131 poster Love, Simon

SYNOPSIS: Seventeen-year-old Simon is a typical teen-ager, except he has not told anyone he is gay and has fallen in love with an anonymous schoolmate.

MY TAKE: This movie, based on a popular YA book, is funny, sincere, and triumphant. Nick Robinson, who plays Simon, carries this movie well, and the other actors who play his best friends and classmates are none too shabby either. The ending does kinda make me think of the “Never Been Kissed” ending, but it works for this story. You’ll enjoy this movie.

Tomb Raider

20180308 poster Lara Croft Tomb Raider

SYNOPSIS: Lara Croft discovers a message from her father, who disappeared seven years ago. Instead of following his instructions to destroy his work, she decides to follow the clues, and her adventure starts.

MY TAKE: This is more of a Lara Croft origin story vs. Angelina Jolie’s already-established Lara Croft. I like Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, and the action is good. But the story is kinda predictable. You can figure out early on who the ultimate villain is going to be. No need to rush out and watch it on opening weekend, but still a good movie to watch if you temper your expectations.
